Your body doesn’t suddenly become unresponsive after 40.

It just stops responding to the same things that worked when you were younger.

I’m not some twenty-something trying to tell you what to do in your 40s. I’m 42 myself, so I’ve seen and felt these changes in my own body too.

The recovery isn’t quite the same.
Fat distribution shifts a little.
The things that worked for me when I was younger don’t produce the same response anymore.

👉🏻 One of the things we don’t talk about enough in the female space, is growth hormone.

Growth hormone is released in pulses and plays a major role in body fat distribution and lean muscle.

GH pulses naturally decline as we age BUT you can improve GH pulses through training strategy.

This is one of the reasons I emphasize:

⚡️heavy compound lifts
⚡️explosive movements
⚡️strategic supersets
⚡️training styles that create a strong metabolic stimulus

Because those approaches help stimulate the GH pulses that protect lean muscle and healthy body composition.

Midlife physiology isn’t a limitation.
And getting older does not need to mean “looking worse.”

Fat loss conversations almost always revolve around two levers: eat less and move more.

And while those absolutely matter, after nearly 20 years coaching I’ve learned that sometimes the real bottleneck isn’t calories or cardio.

It’s physiology.

When the gut is inflamed, dysbiotic, or struggling with digestion, the body often behaves very differently than we expect. Nutrient absorption can be impaired, inflammatory signaling rises, and stress pathways become more active. All of that changes the internal environment your metabolism is operating in.

The gut also plays a massive role in regulating appetite and satiety signals. Hormones like GLP-1, ghrelin, and leptin are heavily influenced by gut health and the microbiome. When that system is disrupted, hunger signals can become unreliable, cravings increase, and fullness cues don’t land the way they should.

That’s why sometimes someone can be doing “everything right” on paper and still feel like their body is non responsive.

Before always pushing harder on calories or piling on more cardio, it’s worth asking a deeper question:

Is the system that regulates metabolism actually functioning well?

Because when digestion improves, inflammation lowers, and the gut environment stabilizes, the body becomes a lot more cooperative.

Not because anything magical happened. But because the physiology finally supports the goal.

She’s a dietitian. She understands macros. She understands metabolism. She understands the science.

What she was struggling with wasn’t knowledge.

What I want is alignment.

I want to work with men and women who care about root-cause healing. Who understand that physique change is built on foundations. Who are willing to regulate their nervous system, repair their gut, lift weights, eat real food, and do the unglamorous work consistently.

Money matters. Growth matters.
But alignment matters more.

Lifting fasted is often marketed as a “fat burning hack.”

But for women, especially in perimenopause and menopause, it’s usually just a stress amplifier.

Here’s why.⤵️

Cortisol is naturally highest in the morning. That’s part of your circadian rhythm. It helps you wake up and mobilize energy.

Lifting itself, also elevates cortisol.

And lifting fasted, with no fuel on board, further drives up cortisol in an already elevated cortisol environment.

Do this long enough and two things will happen.

1️⃣ you will lose muscle, cortisol is catabolic
2️⃣ you will gain fat (cortisol is fat storing)

Lifting in a fed state:
✅ Stimulates muscle protein synthesis
✅ Ensures you have glycogen available to support performance
✅ Creates a stronger anabolic signal

👉🏻 Tells the body to build and burn not “stress and store.”

Lifting in a fasted state:
❌ Muscle protein breakdown increases
❌ Performance decreases
❌ Recovery is blunted
❌ Blood sugar becomes more volatile
❌ The stress response is amplified

Over time, especially in women already navigating hormonal shifts, that combination can mean:

👎🏻 Poorer recovery
👎🏻 More fatigue
👎🏻 Increased sugar cravings later in the day
👎🏻 Reduced lean mass retention
👎🏻 Greater nervous system load

It is utter BS that lifting fasted “burns more fat.”

Total daily fat loss is determined by overall energy balance, muscle retention, and recovery. Studies consistently show no meaningful difference in fat loss between fasted and fed training when calories and protein are equated.

What fasted lifting does do, is increase stress load and muscle protein breakdown which is the opposite direction most women need to move.

Burning more fat during a workout is not the same thing as losing more body fat.

You don’t get lean by proving how little you can eat.

You get lean by supporting adaptation, not amplifying stress.

Being spiritually healthy in a spiritually sick culture requires deliberate effort and daily focus. Scripture calls us to be in the world but not of it, which means if we simply consume what everyone else consumes, listen to what everyone else listens to, watch what everyone else watches, think like everyone else thinks, and live like everyone else lives, we won’t reflect Christ.

Likewise, being healthy in an unhealthy society will always require intention. You have to be willing to swim upstream. I tell my clients all the time: if you want the same health outcomes as the majority of our country- where most people are metabolically unhealthy and overweight- then just eat and live like everyone else. But if you want to be different, set apart, and thriving, you must be intentional.

I know it’s not easy- making choices that are different from people around you, your friends, co workers, even your family- but the easy path in life is seldom the rewarding one. Spiritually or physically. Keep that in mind. Swimming upstream isn’t easy, but but neither is living with the consequences of drifting.

Choose your hard. ❤️

At 55, Sheri wasn’t lacking effort.

She had tried Weight Watchers.
She had white knuckled through 1,200 calorie diets.
She had added more cardio.

And it still wasn’t working.

Not because the effort wasn’t there.
But because her effort was misaligned with her biology.

In menopause, muscle becomes easier to lose and harder to maintain. Stress hormones have a bigger impact. And aggressive calorie restriction, especially paired with excessive cardio, often makes the body more reactive, and less responsive.

Trust me- I see it all the time. The EXACT strategies that worked in your 30s can backfire in your 50s.

Sheri didn’t lose 31 pounds and get off her blood pressure medication because I grind her body down. She lost 31 pounds and got off her blood pressure medication because I taught her how to work with her biology instead of against it.

We focused on restoring metabolic safety.
Preserving and building muscle.
Good sleep and nervous system support.
Balanced meals and predictable eating windows.
Nothing outlandish or extreme just the basics, implemented consistently, and personalized for her.

At 55, Sheri wasn’t lacking effort.

She had tried Weight Watchers.
She had white knuckled through 1,200 calorie diets.
She had added more cardio.

And it still wasn’t working.

Not because the effort wasn’t there.
But because her effort was misaligned with her biology.

In menopause, muscle becomes easier to lose and harder to maintain. Stress hormones have a bigger impact. And aggressive calorie restriction, especially paired with excessive cardio, often makes the body more reactive, and less responsive.

Perimenopause is a hot topic in the wellness space right now, but no one is really helping women understand how to figure out if they’re in it… or not.

FUN FACT 👉🏻 The term “perimenopause” started gaining traction in the 80s-90s as researchers and clinicians began to better recognize and study the distinct hormonal fluctuations and symptoms that occur before full on menopause.

But because perimenopause covers a broad time frame (up to 15 years before menopause) and a broad range of signs and symptoms, it can be really hard to figure out if you’re in perimenopause or not.

No single lab test or marker can definitively “diagnose” perimenopause so we have to largely go based on symptoms and context. The criteria I am sharing in this post, via Professor Priors criteria is- I think- the most helpful criteria I’ve come across, and it’s what I lean on in my coaching, as I work primarily with women 35-60!

Even if a restrictive diet like carnivore initially helped, long-term dietary restriction comes at a cost.

When fiber and fermentable carbohydrates stay out long-term, the gut microbiome adapts by down-regulating the enzymes and microbial species required to digest them. That means reintroducing carbs and fiber later becomes harder not easier.

At the same time, ultra-low-diversity diets reduce microbial diversity.

And higher microbial diversity is consistently associated with:

Yes, calories matter.

But when a deficit isn’t producing fat loss, it’s rarely because “you’re not trying hard enough.”

More often, it’s because the context around that deficit is off.

Bodies aren’t spreadsheets. They’re adaptive biological systems that respond to stress, fuel, training, and health status, not just math.

This is where functional coaching comes in.

Instead of forcing a deeper deficit, I look at why the body isn’t responding to a deficit in the first place: nutrition patterns, training quality, lifestyle stressors, hormone signals, digestion, and ordering labs when appropriate.

The unfortunate truth is that most women haven’t spent an intentional amount of time building muscle.

Many have been “strength training,” but often while dieting, doing excessive cardio, or following programs that never truly prioritized progressive overload or recovery. Over time, that combination quietly erodes lean mass.

So when women enter their 40s and 50s with less muscle than they realize, body composition shifts feel sudden - and hormones get all the blame.

As I look ahead to where health and weight loss are headed, I don’t see a louder industry. I see a more honest one.

One that values strength over thinness.
Context over quick fixes.
Physiology over promises.
And wisdom over optics.

Muscle will matter more- not because bodies need to look a certain way, but because strength supports metabolism, resilience, and the ability to carry life well through every season.

Hormones will be understood as responsive, not rebellious- shaped by how we eat, sleep, move, digest, and live under stress.

Gut health will be approached with more humility, recognizing that a dysregulated nervous system can’t be overridden with protocols or prescriptions alone.

And authority will begin to replace aesthetics- not out of criticism, but out of necessity. Because bodies are complex, and guiding someone well requires more than good genetics or a convincing transformation photo.

And health won’t be about control but stewardship- caring for the body with intention. Seeking guidance with discernment.
Building capacity instead of chasing outcomes.

That’s the direction I see us moving toward, not perfectly, but purposefully. And I believe it’s a shift worth welcoming.

Scripture doesn’t sugarcoat moments like this.

And as Christians, we don’t get a free pass for passivity. Ecclesiastes 7:4 says the man who waits for the perfect conditions stands still forever. At some point you have to stop giving yourself permission to stay parked.

At some point, you need to break camp, and move on.
